Heralding a New Season
The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents “Fanfare” as the Opening Night concert of the 2008-2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 27th, at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.
This season’s opening concert spotlights the acclaimed US Army Herald Trumpets in Verdi’s “Triumphal March” from the opera Aida. Music Director Christopher Wilkins conducts this program, which also features Adams’ Tromba Lontana, Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9.
Whether on the White House balcony hailing the arrival of world dignitaries, or performing on the 50-yard line of the Super Bowl or at the inauguration of a president, the US Army Herald Trumpets is one of the most spectacular groups in the country.
Established in 1959, its first official performance welcomed Queen Elizabeth II to America for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. In the ensuing years the group has performed for presidents, prime ministers and royalty. They have also performed fanfares during opening ceremonies of the 1980 and 2002 Winter Olympics, the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. The ensemble’s perfor-mances at several World’s Fairs, the opening of Walt Disney World, G8 Economic Summits in 1984, 1990 and 2004, and the Super Bowl XXXIX pre-game received critical acclaim.
This premier ensemble played for the Statue of Liberty relighting ceremony, adds fanfare and flourishes to televised holiday celebrations such as A Capitol Fourth, Christmas in Washington, and performs at numerous Memorial Day and Veterans Day events. S

Celebrate with Music!
The Orlando Philharmonic’s 2008 Young People’s Concerts
The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s popular Young People’s Concerts will be performed Oct. 2nd through Nov. 7th at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. Providing a broad performing-arts experience to students, the Young People’s Concerts showcase three artistic disciplines—orchestra, opera and ballet—all in one program.
Geared to Orange and Seminole County schoolchildren in grades 3–5, these 23 concerts are a first exposure to a classical arts concert for many of these students. Three additional concerts will be performed at the Carr for home-schooled and private-school students (Oct. 15th at noon, Nov. 5th at noon, and Nov. 6th at 10:30am; $5 each for students, teachers and chaperones).
This year’s theme is “Celebrate With Music!” Maestro Andrew Lane leads the orchestra as it explores music that celebrates events in many places, times and cultures.
The Orlando Philharmonic believes that exposure to the arts at an early age is crucial to a child’s overall development. Without these concerts, most students would have little or no experience of symphonic music, opera or ballet. S
