It’s been ten years since Toyota created the crossover SUV phenomenon when it introduced the 1996 RAV4 to the public. For 2006, Toyota is bringing the RAV4 back into the forefront with new muscular styling, more power, and larger interior and exterior.

The new RAV4 is more than 14” longer than the previous generation, which means much more passenger space, a new seating design, and optional third-row seating. This set-up allows for various fold-down seat configurations, and a convenient under-floor rear cargo bin for storage on models without the third-row seat.

The cockpit has undergone a major facelift, as well, with new features such as a user-friendly instrument panel with Optitron gauges, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a dual glove box, and an audio mini-jack port.

Performance was key in the RAV4 redesign. Its optional class-leading 3.5-liter VVT-i V6 engine has an astounding 269 horsepower. The standard powertrain has also been improved, now boasting a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with VVT-i and 166 horsepower, making it one of the leaders in four-cylinder power in the small SUV segment. Add improved fuel economy, and this is one compact SUV to be reckoned with.

Both the four-cylinder and the V6 will have optional Electronic On-Demand 4WD and manual 4-wheel lock switch to ensure all-road capability, no matter how wet, icy or unforgiving the road. The RAV4’s ride and handling are significantly improved, thanks to a new platform, which includes redesigned suspension coupled with a new electronic power-steering system.

The Toyota Star Safety System helps even in treacherous driving conditions, with an enhanced version of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control, Brake Assist, and Anti-lock Brake System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. The new RAV4 will also offer optional seat-mounted side airbags for driver and front passenger, and front- and second-row roll-sensing side curtain airbags.
